Le Messager Lachine-Dorval

Présidé par le maire de Lachine, Claude Dauphin, et organisé par l’artiste-peintre Maja Vodanovic, en collaboration avec le cofondateur de la Société pour vaincre la pollution (SVP), Daniel Green, la directrice du Collège Saint-Louis, Diane Laborde, et l’enseignante en art plastique, Jovette Aubin, l’événement «Art et Eau», présenté à l’Entrepôt, est une célébration de l’engagement citoyen des jeunes et de leur art.
Avec cet événement, Maja Vodanovic unit différents participants dans le but d’améliorer la qualité de l’eau du Lac Saint-Louis, notre source d’eau potable, en plus d’être le milieu de vie de 78 variétés de poissons, de la plus grande variété de tortues de tout le fleuve Saint-Laurent et de plus de 200 oiseaux migrateur. L’attention c’est porté sur le ruisseau Bouchard.
Lors de la soirée de vernissage, Daniel Green a révélé le triste sort de ce ruisseau négligé qui sert d’égout pluvial pour la Cité de Dorval. Il traverse l’aéroport Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau, une zone industrielle et résidentielle, avant de se jeter dans le lac Saint-Louis, à proximité de la prise d’eau de la Ville de Montréal, située à Lachine.
L’eau est une préoccupation
Dans son allocution, Claude Dauphin a dit que l’eau est une préoccupation de premier plan pour Lachine. En plus d’avoir amélioré le système d’égouts de l’arrondissement, Lachine prévoit la construction en 2012 d’un nouveau bassin de rétention fermé à Lachine qui aidera grandement à améliorer la qualité de l’eau en empêchant les eaux usées d’être rejetées dans le lac Saint-Louis lors de forte pluies.
Malgré les efforts déjà entrepris par la Ville et d’autres efforts prévus, le maire Dauphin admet que la problématique du ruisseau Bouchard persiste. Lors de la fonte printanière, une contamination importante en provenance de la zone aéroportuaire est véhiculée jusqu’au lac Saint-Louis par les ruisseaux Denis, Smith et Bouchard.
Plan d’action pour le nettoyage
Les élèves du comité eau du Collège ont présenté leur plan d’action pour le nettoyage, la plantation et la sensibilisation des entreprises à la présence du ruisseau et le besoin de le protéger.
Les élèves ont aussi présenté une résolution appelant à la renaturalisation du ruisseau sur le stationnement de Bell Canada, à Dorval. Une résolution a été présentée en ce sens à la séance du conseil de l’arrondissement de Lachine, lundi soir dernier. Une pétition en support à cette résolution a déjà recueilli de nombreuses signatures.
Le maire Dauphin dit souhaiter de tout cœur que le projet du Comité Eau du Collège et la démarche artistique entreprise sauront améliorer la qualité de vie à Lachine.
Formant une immense murale, les œuvres touchantes décrivant les animaux du fleuve Saint-Laurent, exprimaient l’esprit unique et charmeur de chaque élève.
Ce qui a retenu le plus l’attention du public, et même ému jusqu’aux larmes certains; les petits textes des élèves décrivant leur choix de documents sur lequel ils ont peint leur animal choisi.
En exemple, Michelle Dumontet qui a peint un Omble Chevalier sur ceci… «Une page du dictionnaire de mon grand-père, son certificat de naissance et de décès, l’article racontant sa mort, voilà les documents qui représentent un brin d’histoire de ma famille.»
En intégrant ainsi leur culture à celle de la vie sauvage qui les entoure les élèves sont portés à tisser des liens avec celle-ci, d’y faire plus attention, et de la respecter davantage.
Les artistes professionnels qui ont participé à l’événement ont appuyé par leurs œuvres les jeunes désireux de vivre dans un monde en santé. Pierre Lefebvre a présenté des rivières monumentales et lumineuses, Richard Montpetit a peint la lumière réflétée par la surface d’un cours d’eau, Jeannettte Perreault, un bain chaud, et Geneviève Jost, le paysage de Baie du Febvre, sa nature et ses animaux peints avec grande tendresse, Claude De Gaspé Alleyn, une vue cocasse du village de Newport, dans le golfe Saint-Laurent. Quant à Maja Vodanovic, elle a choisi de peindre Marianne Pelletier, une des élèves participantes au projet. Dans ce tableau lyrique, Marianne est placée debout, au centre de son histoire, le canal de Lachine, l’héritage qu’elle défend.
Cette tendresse sentie durant la soirée ne serait pas possible sans l’engagement des jeunes du Comité Eau du Collège qui ont décidé de passer à l’action.

Students painting wildlife inspired to try to restore Bouchard Creek

As part of an art project focusing on local fauna, some high school seniors became aware of Bouchard Creek and are now seeking assurances that it be re-naturalized and its ecological function as an aquatic habitat be restored.

Bouchard Creek is a 2.8-kilometre stream that starts on airport property in Dorval, meanders through an industrial park, under Highway 20 and flows into Lake St. Louis, just up stream from a water intake used by the filtration plant in Lachine. It also happens to pass by a new multi-unit residential development along Bouchard Ave. and then heads underground through a nearby Bell Canada property before emptying into the lake.

“The stream is important because the discharge is just up stream in Lac St. Louis from Montreal’s water intake and what happens is that if there is ever a massive spill, your industrial chemicals, it may endanger Montreal’s water intake,” said environmentalist Daniel Green from the Société pour vainer la pollution, who collaborated with students from Collège St. Louis on their project.

“They need to isolate this stream from all possible spills on the Dorval airport area, condemn all visible pipes now discharging into the creek. The stormwater drains are often the drains that receive the spills of chemicals from the Dorval industrial (park).

“They also need to create vegetation buffer zones on either side of Bouchard Creek to protect it from erosion,” he added.

The stream has been around for thousands of years and helps to prevent flooding and acts as a filter for water heading to the lake, Green pointed out. A committee of students involved in the art project have proposed a resolution, already presented to the Lachine borough and eventually to be given to Dorval, asking for their support to restore the stream. The students have also written to Bell Canada asking them to take up the challenge of restoring Bouchard stream. Since it is now channelled about four metres underground near the Bell parking lot at 200 Bouchard Ave., it prevents the development of a natural ecosystem that filters water run-off and improves its quality, according to the students.

Artist Maja Vodanovic, whose daughter attends the Lachine school, led the students through their efforts, from realizing their artwork to lobbying for an environmental cause.

“I wanted to do an art project with them that has an optimistic outlook,” she said, adding the intent was to paint local wildlife.

Vodanovic said the students want to work in collaboration with municipal officials and Bell Canada to restore the stream.

“We’re not accusing Bell of being the bad guys,” she said. “This was done 20 or 30 years ago when the parking lot was built.”

An ideal solution would be if the section of the stream currently channelled underground through the parking lot could be diverted to ground level and redirected through a park area situated between the Bell property and the adjacent Queen of Angels school, Vodanovic said.

The students plan to organize a cleanup of the stream, plant trees and shrubs along its banks and embark on an awareness campaign to make the neighbouring industries aware of the presence of the stream and the need to protect it.

“In the end, it’s about the water we drink, and we can see the whole stream is polluted,” said Collège St. Louis student Anh Thy Le Quang.

Since art was involved from the get-go, Mélanie Branchaud said fellow students were more motivated to take on an environmental cause.

“It made it easier for people to come support us,” she said. “It’s a way for us to express ourselves.

The grade 11 students of  Collège Saint-Louis express their desire to protect the life of the St-Lawrence. They combine their personal effects, intimate documents with images of the river’s wildlife and create a link between the river’s existence and their own. Coming from very different backgrounds the students of this international college connect a variety of cultures to our unique wildlife.

In solidarity with the students, professional painters from Québec,  are participating in the project : Geneviève Jost, Pierre Lefebvre, Richard Montpetit,  Jeannette Perreault, , Claude De Gaspé Alleyn, and Maja Vodanovic.

In collaboration with the co-founder of SVP, la Société pour vaincre la pollution, Daniel Green and Guy Deschamps from the RSMA, Réseau de suivi du milieu aquatique, and Lachine mayor Me Claude Dauphin, the students of the Water Committee will act to protect the  water quality of the Bouchard stream which runs into Lac St-Louis not far from the school and the municipal water intake .

The Water Committee will organise a cleanup of the stream, plantations of trees and shrubs along its banks, and embark on an awareness campaign to make the neighbouring industries aware of the presence of the stream and the need to protect it. The Committee submitted a resolution to Lachine’s town council aiming the renaturalisation and decontamination of the Bouchard stream. These actions make possible the optimism expressed through their art.

The project is initiated and organised by the painter Maja Vodanovic in collaboration with  the environmentalist Daniel Green and College Saint-Louis principal Diane Laborde, art teacher Jovette Aubin and assistant Christelle Senecale .
