The Maja experience
A Mayor Committed to Optimizing Residential Construction for the Benefit of All!
- Since 2018, a total of 621 community housing units have been added through the acquisition of private properties or new construction, helping to increase the supply of affordable housing.
- Lachine has approved the largest real estate project in Quebec under the new powers granted by Bill 31. This project comprises 590 housing units, including 100 units designated as social housing.
A Mayor Committed to Economic Growth and Environmental Sustainability
- Lachine’s Industrial Park is thriving and is one of the most in-demand industrial zones in Quebec, currently with no land available for sale. This area has developed over 21.8 million square feet of industrial space, making it one of the most active sectors in the province and attracting major international companies. With two rail yards and convenient access to both the port and airport, Lachine’s Industrial Park effectively connects Montreal to global markets.
- Business Growth on Notre-Dame Street: Since 2020, 37 new businesses have opened in Lachine, including 25 establishments on Notre-Dame Street, which has recently formed a Commercial Development Corporation. Between 2017 and 2020, the PRAM-Commerce program invested more than $10 million to transform and renovate businesses along this main commercial artery. A complete reconstruction of the street is planned for next year, with the design concept resulting from an international design competition.
A Mayor Who Unites and Truly Believes in Her Community
- Lachine and Kahnawa:ke, with over 300 years of collaboration, are coming together to tell a positive story between their two nations through the construction of a cultural center and the repositioning of the Lachine Museum. It’s time to celebrate the remarkable history of the steelworkers from Kahnawa:ke who worked alongside Lachine’s Dominion Bridge to help build modern Canada.
- The first street in the Lachine-Est EcoDistrict proudly bears the name SkaniaTara:Ti, which means “from the other shore” in Kanien’kéha, the name given to Lachine by the Kanyen’kehà:ka (Mohawk) Nation.
- Thanks to the collective efforts of Lachine’s citizens, an innovative governance model for planning the Lachine-Est EcoDistrict has been established. This model brings together the community, developers, and city experts at the decision-making table. It has been recognized by the Urban Development Institute and the Council of Europe, leading to the unanimous adoption of the Special Urban Planning Program (PPU) for this 70-hectare industrial site.
- In collaboration with various levels of government, more than $45 million has been invested in Lachine’s parks and sports facilities from 2018 to 2024. This investment aims to improve residents’ quality of life and keep our youth active. Facilities include Grovehill, Brewster, Martin-Lapointe Arena, Dalbé-Viau, and LaSalle Park Pool.
- Support for a Major Environmental Project: The construction of new incinerators at the Jean-R. Marcotte wastewater treatment plant is underway. Once completed, these incinerators will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 79,000 tonnes per year, which is equivalent to removing 24,000 cars from the roads.
- Support for the Final Phases of Montreal’s Major Water Ozonation Project: This initiative aims to eliminate 99% of bacteria, 96% of viruses, and 90% of emerging contaminants from our wastewater before it is discharged into the St. Lawrence River.
- Promotion of Rainwater Management Solutions: In collaboration with the city’s water department, Maja advocates for transforming streets and parks into infrastructures that can absorb rainwater, systematically making our city greener and more resilient.
A Daring Mayor Who Works Together with Citizens, Governments, and Institutions.
- Collaboration with Federal and Provincial Governments: Planning and implementing one of Quebec’s largest shoreline renaturalization and stabilization projects at René-Lévesque Park and the new Lachine Waterfront Park, transforming more than 5.8 km of shoreline over the coming years.
- Collaboration with Concordia University and the Ministry of Economy, Innovation, and Energy: Launching one of Quebec’s largest urban clean energy projects through the creation of a district thermal energy network for the development of the Lachine-Est EcoDistrict.
- Advocacy for Community Priorities: Standing alongside a mobilized and united community, Maja amplified the voices of thousands of citizens advocating to preserve Lakeside Academy and the Lachine Hospital. These efforts saved both institutions and secured over $225 million for the expansion and reconstruction of the Lachine Hospital.
- Active Participation in Flood Resilience: Working with Montreal’s water department and external partners to implement an action plan to address flooding during heavy rains, ensuring the protection of homes currently at risk.
A Mayor Who Promotes and Supports Initiatives
- Support for the Creation and Development of New Cultural and Sports Organizations and Events, including:
- The Montreal Youth Literature Festival, held at Noël-Spinelli Park in Lachine;
- The Lachine International Vocal Academy, hosted at the borough hall;
- The Dame Festive Festival, on Notre-Dame Street;
- Tous sur l’eau, taking place at the new Lachine waterfront park.
- Facilitates Major Citizen-Led Projects: Alongside Councillor Michèle Flannery and the Lachine Council, Maja supported the realization of the largest citizen-driven project from Montreal’s first participatory budget. This initiative transformed the 34th Avenue pier into a new iconic space overlooking Lake Saint-Louis.
